Austin, TX – As the 89th Texas Legislative Session begins, the Texas Youth Power Alliance (TYPA), a coalition of the state’s leading youth civic engagement organizations, proudly announces the 2025 Youth Capitol Takeover, a two-day event on April 15–16 in Austin, Texas. This event will bring together hundreds of young Texans at the State Capitol to demand that lawmakers address the defining challenges of this generation. TYPA is calling on lawmakers this session to listen and defend the future of Texas.
TYPA’s member organizations, Jolt Initiative, MOVE Texas, Texas Rising, Radical Registrars, Deeds Not Words, and Bloom RGV, are ready to take on the critical fights to advance environmental justice, protect reproductive freedoms, defend trans rights, and expand democratic participation this legislative session. As the leading voice for bold, youth-driven solutions that protect the rights and futures of all Texans, TYPA is mobilizing a generation to speak out against harmful policies, stand up for the progress their communities deserve, and make their voices heard in the Texas State Capitol.
“Young Texans are the driving force behind progress in this state, bringing the energy to challenge the status quo, the discipline to organize for change, and the joy of building a future we deserve,” said Claudia Yoli, Executive Director at MOVE Texas. “At the 2023 Youth Capitol Takeover, we made history. This year, young people are taking over the Capitol again to demand the bold action that our communities have been building for years.”
The 2025 Youth Capitol Takeover builds on the success of the 2023 event, where over 350 young Texans made history as the largest youth-led Capitol event. Participants participated in a march to the Capitol, education sessions, and a dynamic celebration in the rotunda featuring storytelling, a DJ, drag performances, and speakers from the Texas Legislature. The event also included visits with lawmakers, where young people pressed for action on the issues shaping their lives. This year, TYPA and its partners aim to bring even more voices to the Capitol to demonstrate the transformative power of youth organizing in shaping Texas’ future.
“In Texas, young people’s lived experiences – particularly those of Black, brown, LGBTQIA+, and working-class youth – have been systematically dismissed by politicians who claim to represent us,” said Ofelia Alonso, Director at Texas Rising. “The Youth Capitol Takeover is about reclaiming our power and demanding that lawmakers see, hear, and respond to the full diversity of our communities. When young Texans from the Rio Grande Valley to East Texas come together, we bring not just our challenges but our vision for a state where everyone can thrive regardless of their zip code, background, or identity. Our movement is built on the understanding that our struggles for reproductive justice, climate action, and democratic participation are deeply interconnected, and we won’t let anyone divide us in our fight for the future we deserve.”
“The Youth Capitol Takeover plays a critical role for young people in shaping the future of Texas. The Texas Legislature has a profound impact on every aspect of our lives—from education, healthcare, human rights, and more. As students from across the state gather to participate in this process, students are learning firsthand how decisions are made and, more importantly, how they can influence those decisions to build a more equitable and inclusive future,” said Joslynn Sanchez, Policy and Advocacy Manager at Deeds Not Words. “This moment empowers youth with the tools and knowledge to navigate the legislative process. Their advocacy today becomes the foundation for tomorrow’s transformative policies.”
Young Texans across the state are invited to pre-register here and make their voices heard at the 2025 Youth Capitol Takeover on April 15–16 in Austin, Texas. Travel and lodging will be accommodated.
