Texas House Passes Racially Gerrymandered Congressional Map, Abandons Flood Victims

TEXAS – Today, the Texas House passed a racially gerrymandered congressional map designed to silence Black and Brown Texans and cement power for Trump-aligned extremists. House Bill 4 now heads to the Senate and inches dangerously closer to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk to be signed into law.

This latest map is a direct attack on fair representation. After widespread public opposition to their earlier proposal in the first special session, Abbott and his allies scrapped transparency altogether, introducing a brand-new, equally heinous map and forcing it through the House with zero opportunity for Texans to weigh in. This comes after Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and Speaker Dustin Burrows told flood victims’ families they would prioritize flood response ‘above all else’ in the second special session.

The rushed redistricting process, expected to move to the Senate by the end of the week, makes clear this special session is not about serving the people of Texas. It’s about serving the political interests of those clinging to power.

MOVE Texas Action Fund Political Director Stephanie Gomez issued the following statement:

“Over the last month, we’ve watched Greg Abbott put his relationship with Donald Trump and DC elites over the interests of Texas. We entered this second special session expecting urgent action on flood relief, but instead, we’re watching a racist congressional map race its way to the Governor’s desk while our neighbors are still cleaning up their homes in Central Texas. Our self-interested state leadership promised to meet the moment with a ‘Texas-first agenda,’ yet all they’ve delivered is their promises to President Donald Trump. Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, and Dustin Burrows would rather move forward with an insincere legislative process than face the people they were elected to serve.

Our fight for Texas’ future becomes clearer every day. Texans must come together to dethrone self-appointed kings and return power to the people. MOVE Texas is ready to meet our communities to help them forward in this moment. Even when they slam the door on us in the Senate, we will be there: in the chambers, in the streets, in their inboxes, exposing their actions and insisting they answer to the real needs of Texans. We will prove to them, and to the nation, that Texans deserve better. We know it, and we demand it. Step up, or step aside.”
