Full of Power Grabs and Political Attacks, Second Abbott-Called Special Session Ends
TEXAS – Last night, the second Abbott-called special session came to a close, capping off a summer where political power plays and special interests were prioritized over the needs of everyday Texans.
Gov. Abbott spent the season catering to Trump and extremist allies, abusing unlimited power to push an unpopular agenda Texans never asked for. From a mid-decade redistricting scam to renewed attacks on Texans’ freedom to live authentically, Abbott showed once again that his circle cares only about clinging to power.
In response to the session, MOVE Texas Action Fund Interim Executive Director Mia Baldera released the following statement:
“Abbott and power-hungry politicians will stop at nothing to dodge accountability; suspending rules, shutting out the public, and stacking the deck to guarantee outcomes they could never earn fairly. Let’s be clear: this is not winning. This is rigging. On a level playing field, politicians like Abbott wouldn’t win, and they know it.
Instead of leading, Abbott renewed attacks on Trans Texans, access to abortion medication, and the voting power of Texans of color, all while barely scratching the surface of the disaster relief that Central Texas Flood victims need. Texans deserve better than a governor who bows to Trump and betrays his own people. That’s not strength, that’s cowardice. The people are the only force Abbott should fear, and we are coming. The thousands who showed up to voice their demands at the Capitol this summer are just the beginning.
