Federal Court Strikes Down Abbott’s Racially Gerrymandered Map Designed to Dilute Black and Brown Voting Power
TEXAS — A three-judge federal panel, including a Trump-appointed judge, ruled today that Texas cannot use Governor Abbott’s recently redrawn gerrymandered map in the 2026 elections.
Abbott spent the summer weaponizing his unchecked power to push through an unpopular redistricting scheme in the Texas Legislature. The court’s findings confirm what Texans already knew: this map was engineered to lock in five congressional seats and racially gerrymander the state’s largest and most diverse voting bloc.
MOVE Texas Action Fund Interim Executive Director Mia Balderas responded:
“After months of scheming, rigging, and silencing Texans, the court sided with the people who saw through this from the start. The 2025 map is a racist attempt to suppress young Texans of color and predetermine outcomes they can’t win fairly. Today’s decision is a major victory, powered by community strength and elected champions who refused to stay quiet and exposed this attack on our democracy. Texans, the nation, and the courts all agree: don’t mess with Texas voters..”
